KM Obaidur Rahman is no more

A veteran politician and BNP standing committee member KM Obaidur Rahman is no more. Obaidur Rahman, also former minister and several times elected lawmaker of Faridpur-2 constituency died in the city''s Apollo Hospitals on Wednesday morning. He was 68. Family sources said Obaidur fell sick at about 11 am as his blood sugar level dropped. Immediately, he was rushed to the Apollo hospital where the on-duty physicians declared him dead at about 11.37 am. He left behind his wife Prof. Shaheda Obaid and only daughter Samaora and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death. The front-ranking leader and golden son of Faridpur KM Obaidur Rahman will be buried at his ancestral graveyard at Lashkardia village under Nagarkanda upazila of Faridpur district.The first namaj-e-janaza of Obaidur Rahman was held at Banani Chairmanbari ground on Wednesday afternoon, followed by the second janaza at the south plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Speaker Barrister Muhammad Jamiruddin Sircar, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Prof Badruddoza Chowdhury, Workers Party Chief Rashed Khan Menon, senior leaders of the BNP, including Saifur Rahman, former ministers, former MPs, leaders of different political parties among others took part in the janaza at the south plaza of the Sangsad Bhaban. The third namaj-e-janaza of Obaidur Rahman was held in front of the BNP central office at Nayapaltan. BNP standing committee members, other central leaders and a large number of leaders and activists of BNP and its front organisations took part in the janaza.After the janaza at Nayapaltan, BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia placed a wreath on the coffin on behalf of the party. She also covered the coffin of Obaidur Rahman with the party flag.The body of KM Obaidur Rahman will be taken to Faridpur following another namaj-e-janaza at Baitul Mukarran National Mosque tonight.A huge number of party leaders and activists also took part in the namaj-e-janaja. Several times elected Member of Parliament from Faridpur-2 constituency K M Obaidur played a vital role in BNP politics and massive development in greater Faridpur when he was BNP secretary general and state minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism during the rule of late Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. On information of his death, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia accompanied by a number of top BNP leaders rushed to the Banani residence of KM Obaidur Rahman on Wednesday morning.Packed with emotion Khaleda consoled his wife Prof Shaheda Obaid, daughter and grandchildren. Hearing death news of Obaidur, party leaders and activists and other inhabitants of greater Faridpur staying in the capital city Dhaka also rushed to his Bananai residence to pay their last tribute and have a glimpse of his body.
